What is Tixel Skin Resurfacing?

Tixel skin resurfacing is a skin tightening treatment that promotes new collagen production and delivers anti-aging results. In comparison to other skin resurfacing procedures, Tixel is non-invasive and requires little downtime–in fact, you can apply makeup the next day.

How It Works

The Tixel machine is a tabletop device equipped with two corded handpieces. Each is tipped with a small titanium plate covered in a grid of 81 pyramid-shaped pins. 

The practitioner depresses a trigger on the handpiece that briefly presses the heated metal plate to your skin’s surface, delivering controlled-contact heat. This heat create microwounds or micro-thermal injuries that encourage new collagen production as the skin heals. As a result, skin looks smoother, tighter and younger.

The best candidates for Tixel are healthy adults of any skin tone who want to increase collagen production in their skin. They want to experience the skin tightening effects of Tixel and hope to minimize the appearance of skin damage and aging, including visible wrinkles, stretch marks, sun damage and acne scars. 

You might not be a good candidate for Tixel if you are/have:  

• A compromised immune system 
• Been exposed to excessive UV light during the four weeks leading up to treatment 
• Irritation, tattoos or sensitivity in the treatment area
• Pregnant or breastfeeding 
• Recent skin rejuvenation procedures (past three months)
• Skin cancer, moles or precancerous lesions in the area to be treated 
• Taken prescription isotretinoin during the past 3 months 

What to Expect From Your Tixel Treatment

A Tixel treatment is an easy, non-invasive way to rejuvenate your skin with very little downtime. It’s possible to have this resurfacing procedure during your lunch break–some sessions only last about 15 minutes! 

To prepare: 

• Avoid excessive UV exposure, including tanning beds, for one month (four weeks) before your session
• Protect your skin with SPF 50
• Tell your doctor about any nutritional supplements or medications you’re taking 
• If you experience cold sores, take antiviral medicine before your session

Before your appointment, cleanse your skin with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and do not apply any skin care products, including moisturizer or makeup. Additionally, don’t wear contact lenses to your appointment. 

Before your session, your practitioner will clean your skin and may apply topical cream to numb your skin. Tixel can often be used without anesthetic, as it’s a low-discomfort treatment. 

During your treatment, the provider will gently move the Tixel wand over your skin. As it warms your skin, you’ll feel a little pressure and heat. Treatments average 15–30 minutes, depending on the number and size of the treatment area or areas. 

When they’re done, your practitioner will use a special spray to disinfect your skin and apply a gentle moisturizer.

Aftercare

Caring for your skin after a Tixel session is simple. Because this treatment doesn’t require as much social downtime as other skin resurfacing treatments, you can return to your normal routines right away. However, there are some basic guidelines to follow after a session: 

• Do not wash your face or apply makeup for the first 24 hours after your session.
• Use fragrance-free skin moisturizer every six hours, cleansing your hands before each application.
• Avoid touching the treated areas of your skin, except to apply moisturizer as directed. 
• Wear SPF 50 sunscreen and avoid excessive exposure to UV rays for two weeks to three months, depending on your doctor’s recommendation. This will help prevent the risk of hyperpigmentation after the procedure.

For a few days after treatment, you’ll experience warmth, sensitivity and redness, as if you’ve been out in the sun. In some cases, you may experience scabbing. These side effects will resolve within a week.
